![]() The Synology DS1019+ is a great choice as it has five drive bays and hardware transcoding, but if you don't care about transcoding, the DS1618+ might be a better option due to its six drive bays. ![]() Everything I discuss can be done on practically any hardware, but for my money, I want something that has low power usage (it'll be running 24x7), is easy to setup, and works with minimal input from me. If you want to cut the cord and control your own media, the first thing you'll need is a server. Today I'll take a look at one such solution: A Synology NAS device, running Plex, and connected to a SiliconDust HDHomeRun Connect Quatro. In the past, the convenience factor alone may have been worth it, but nowadays there are many easy-to-use software packages that, paired with an antenna, can be a worthwhile replacement for the monthly bills, and while some shows can't be seen for free, you can still pair it with a subscription service or two to fill in the gaps. With an HDHomeRun, you can get TV to any device on your network, even those that you wouldn’t have thought of.Ī sample unit was provided for the purpose of this review. It's no secret that the price of cable and satellite is increasing every year, forcing many people to wonder if it makes sense to keep paying the likes of DirecTV and Comcast for the service. That only gives you TV channels on that TV though, and the tuners inside TVs are usually pretty bad. Sure, you could just use the tuner in your TV. If your home already has an antenna, you’re saving even more. For less than a month’s cable bill for some people, you can grab an OTA tuner that’ll let you watch TV on two devices on your home network plus a quality digital antenna to pick up the signal. If you’re serious about cutting the hold that cable TV has over your wallet, but can’t live without some TV, absolutely pick one of these up. ![]() If you want DVR functionality, you can get one of HDHomeRun’s devices, or you can put your own DVR together with Plex and Plex Pass. ![]() It can pick up closed captioning, and any other things like if there’s a Spanish version of the channel audio. It looks like any other streaming service UI, with the list of currently picked-up channels overlaid on the right edge. The HDHomeRun app works, but it’s a bit spartan. ![]()
